While classic compositional aids such as ‘rule of thirds’ or the ‘golden spiral’ are a good starting point for composing your photos, strict adherence to these rules may not always yield the best composition.  In this presentation, I discuss how I assess a scene, determine key elements, intersections and made final composition choices that emphasize my subject while also creating harmony amongst the supporting elements. 

• I break down several of my photos to describe the key considerations I made when composing the image and show how they may or may not align with formulaic compositional guides.  

• I also discuss the additional cropping decisions made in post-production, including when to use alternate aspect ratios than the 2×3 that most of our cameras produce.
