About Rachel:
I’m a photographer based in Des Moines, Iowa. I’m a storyteller at heart. I’ve been taking photos in some form or fashion for nearly 20 years! My journey has taken me worldwide before finally returning to my Iowa roots. I’ve ridden in military helicopters, followed cowboys on cattle roundups, photographed the past five presidents, and met various characters along the way. My most significant honor has been the opportunity to document the most precious moments in the lives of people in my community.

I’ve worked at notable publications, including The Virginian-Pilot, The Palm Beach Post, The Dubois County Herald, and National Geographic Magazine. My work has been published by National Geographic, TIME, The New York Times, Washington Post, Reuters, Bloomberg, MSNBC, PBS, The Wall Street Journal, AARP, and Education Week. Articles about me and my photography have appeared in Photo District News and News Photographer magazines and online at The New York Times Lens Blog, Multimedia Muse, Harvard University’s Nieman Storyboard, and Kobré Guide websites.

I studied at the University of Iowa and have a Master’s in Visual Communication from Ohio University. I’ve received awards from the National Press Photographer’s Association, Pictures of the Year International, College Photographer of the Year, Indiana News Photographer’s Association, and the Iowa Newspaper Foundation. I received the 2010 Kit King Scholarship from the National Press Photographers Foundation.

I enjoy cooking, camping, canoeing, and riding bikes. I live with my husband, John, and dog Hera in Des Moines.
